5 Tips When it Comes to Furnishing Small Spaces

When it comes to furnishing a space, don’t let the size of the space determine how much thought and effort goes into maximizing the space’s potential. Though it may be a small space, the functionality of the space isn’t necessarily less than that of a bigger one.

Here are some tips to ensure that you are maximizing the potential of any room you furnish:

1. Choose Visually Lightweight Furniture

Think along the lines of slender furniture. When furnishing your room, choose pieces that have slender legs as they take up less visual space. Allowing for visual space will make a small space appear larger.

2. Keep larger items on the perimeter of the room

Place items such as couches and hutches against the wall to maintain the feeling of depth in the space.

3. Utilize Mirrors

Mirrors offer a lot, especially in smaller rooms. While they’re a great decorative piece within themselves, they do so much more. If the room doesn’t get much natural light, mirrors can reflect what amount of natural light you do have around the room. Mirrors also help make spaces feel bigger by giving the illusion of more square feet.

4. Experiment with Scale

Just because the room is small doesn’t necessarily mean the furniture has to be small. Choose large statement pieces wisely, and then go back in and focus on the smaller decor pieces.

5. Keep Everything Cohesive

Since the space is already on the smaller side, ensuring that the room is cohesive is important. Stick to a color palette and make sure all items in the room fit well in the space.

DIY Doesn’t Mean Doing It All Yourself

How handy would you say you are? Can you fix a leaking faucet or install a new backsplash? Do you own all the drills, power saws and sanders used by the pros?

It can be tempting to DIY it all — especially if you’re on a budget. After all, you can have an active role in improving your home, and save cash to put toward other things. Why wouldn’t you want to?

The truth is not all projects are suited for a DIYer — no matter how much of a shiplap expert you might be.

If you’re considering a few renovations, here’s when to put on your toolbelt and when you might want to call a pro:

In the Kitchen: You can probably replace a sink, reface your cabinets or install a new dishwasher.

Want to move the sink or add recessed lighting? You’ll want a pro.

In the Bathroom: Installing new floor tiles, upgrading your toilet seat or changing your showerhead are all tasks you can do.

If you want in-floor radiant heating or to install a tub where there isn’t one, bring in a pro.

On the Exterior: Looking for more curb appeal with a new garden bed and a fresh coat of paint on your front door? Have at it.

Substantial upgrades like installing a skylight, repairing your roof or repaving your driveway are better suited for a professional.

Structural Changes: If you’re super handy, you can probably install drywall or relocate a door.

But if you’re changing an area that’s load-bearing? Definitely call a pro.

Remember, DIY doesn’t mean doing everything yourself. You’ll want to hire a professional for anything that requires specialized knowledge. There’s no shame in asking for help from an expert.

Make Your Own Household Cleaning Products

Whether you’re looking for greener ways to clean your home or you just want to save money at the store, there are simple household cleaning products you can make on your own. Use the recipes, tips, and precautions below to help you get started.

All Purpose Cleaner
Create your own inexpensive and effective all-purpose cleaner with liquid castile soap, tea tree oil, vodka, washing soda (not baking soda) and white vinegar. Boil the vinegar in the microwave, mix in the remaining ingredients according to the recipe and put the solution in a spray bottle for easy cleaning.

Laundry Detergent Avoid questionable foaming agents and heavy fragrance by making your own laundry detergent. Measure the correct amounts of soap flakes or grated bar soap, borax and washing soda, and store in an airtight container.

Tips to Keep In Mind

  • Avoid mix-ups by labeling and dating each cleaning product when it’s made.
  • Add a few drops of essential oils like tea tree, lavender, and lemon to scent your homemade cleaning solutions.
  • Substitute vodka for vinegar if you want a lighter smell.
  • Before using a homemade cleaner on delicate surfaces like hardwood floors or marble, first test it in a small, hidden area.

What to Avoid

  • Do not mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar. The dangerous combination can damage your respiratory system.
  • Keep hydrogen peroxide and vinegar separate at all times. Together they create peracetic acid, a highly corrosive compound that can lead to chemical burns.
  • Don’t use vinegar on reactive metal surfaces like aluminum or cast iron.
  • Refrain from using large amounts of any cleaning solution, homemade or store-bought, in unventilated areas.

When mixed and used properly, homemade cleaning solutions can work as well as, if not better than, commercial cleaners, plus they’re also easier on your wallet. Make sure you know the basics before you make your own cleaning products.
